Unique library in Kharkov
Did you know that a unique private library was opened in Kharkov, in which one book occupies an entire shelf?
This social library enables visually impaired and blind people to enjoy reading classical and modern literature published in Braille.
The production of books for blind people requires special techniques and skills. Today in Ukraine there are no more than ten printers that “know how” to produce such literature.
The library fund is still small – 52 books in Ukrainian, Russian and English. The guests of the library have the opportunity to read “The Master and Margarita” by Bulgakov, “Mitkozavr from Yuryevka” by Yaroslav Stelmakh, “The Yellow Prince” by Vasily Barka, “Gulliver’s Travels” by Jonathon Swift, “Sanatorium Zone” by Mikola Khmilyov, “Zakhar Berkut” by Ivan Franko, Lesya Ukrainka.One book, printed in Braille, is a multivolume of adapted text – an entire shelf in the library is allocated for it. For example, “The Master and Margarita” in 16 volumes.
Braille is a dotted tactile font designed for writing and reading by blind people. Developed in 1824 by the Frenchman Louis Braille, who lost his sight at the age of 15. He took as a basis the “night font” used by the military for reports that could be read in the dark.The first experimental typography is always in touch and continues to print books, magazines, notebooks and calendars for you 24/7 for 2021!
