Traditionally, this is a postcard or a cardboard house with opening windows, where each cell can contain candy, a chocolate bar, a tea bag, cosmetics, a figurine, a note with wishes, a prayer or an excerpt from the Scriptures, as well as other gifts. Calendars also come in the form of pouches, sachets, handbags or bundles hung on a ribbon. Also, calendars often include puzzles and other games.
The first mentions of Christmas calendars date back to the first half of the 19th century.
The tradition began in Germany. The first children’s Christmas calendar is believed to have been printed by Gerhard Lang at his «Reichhold&Lang» in Munich: in 1903, his company introduced the first Advent calendar with 24 colored cards attached to a cardboard board. The printing house closed in the 1930s, but until then no less than thirty different Christmas calendars for children had been created.
